The invention of La Karbah™

The story of how La Karbah™ was crafted from a simple sunset idea to a world first patented product right here in the heart of the Kimberley, Western Australia.

If you have ever traveled to the region then you'd know that Mother Nature can put on quite a show throughout seasons. From the calm waters on Lake Kununurra during the "dry", to the wild waterfalls in the "wet", it never seems to failure the local community that are here to watch and thrive like the flora and Forna.

This one particular time during the start of the wet season, Shaun (my older step brother) and myself were catching up at his house in Wyndham.  A lighting storm had presented itself and we figured a good place to watch the show would be at the top of five rivers look out... One of the best lookouts in the region, well at least we think so. 

As the storm rolled in I couldn't believe our luck of not being hit by lighting yet, we stayed in the car for a majority of the time as it seemed to be the safest place once the storm came closer. Looking back at the idea the safest place would have been anywhere that wasn't on the top of this lookout. We're not those sorts of people, we get a kick from trying to kiss Mother Nature on the hand and grab the bull by the horns when it comes to adventuring the back yard. 

Now mind you the constant lighting strikes are literally cracking the ground below as well as connecting with the surface of the brown salty water, called the Cambridge Gulf. At this point the car is the safest place even though it's packed full of metal, the rubber on the tires would've counted the effect. right?

We were in Shaun's land cruiser, and like every bloke that enjoys a good bevy they know not to put drinks on the dash. I wanted to put my drink down somewhere safe so I could dig my hands into the movie snacks we brought with us.

Shaun wasn't having a bar of it. The windows were down and I was in the passenger seat with my elbow cocked out the window like a truckies missus with a lap full of snacks. I thought to myself "If only I could safely rest my drinks on something that was within reach and wouldn't require getting out the car."

After a few minutes the idea popped into my vision of having something that could be attached to the side of the car and removed when the show was over.

I vocalised the idea and joked about not using the dash as the bar mat whilst trying to juggling the items spread across the cab of the car. We laughed and I put the drink on the floor using my feet to pinch it ensuring that it wouldn't spill.

The storm passed, which was still to this day one of the best shows I have ever seen. The snacks were now empty packets, the drinks were finished and it was time to go home.  

For some reason the idea stayed with me the following day and I continued to think about it for the next couple of weeks. The constant thought of "how I can make something that can solve this problem".

After a few rough sketches and a couple prototypes the problem was solved months later. I didn't spend everyday on the idea but it was in the back of my mind as I thought it would be funny to show Shaun and have a laugh about it. 

3 years later and after multiple changes to the prototypes, I am happy to present you and the community the patented product called La Karbah™.

It's funny to think that from a random afternoon adventure and simple joke about no drinks on the dash, La Karbah™  has been hand crafted in the red dirt and is now here to Raise the Bar for all.
